What is Food Licensing?
To start any food or similar business, it is mandatory to get FSSAI License or FSSAI Certification in India. The License is issued by the Food Safety and Standards Authority Act,2006. To implement the FSSAI Rules, the Food Safety and Standard Authority of India and the State Food Authorities are jointly responsible.
The FSSAI oversees the registration and license of the Food business operators and moreover dictates the rules and regulations for running any food or related business in India.

Overview of FSSAI Certification / License

Food Safety and Standard Authority of India (FSSAI) is an autonomous body, established under the Ministry of Health and Welfare, Government of India.
FSSAI Certification/ License/ Registration
FSSAI License or Registration is mandatory for all food and food-related businesses. A 14-digit License number is issued by the FSSAI to let us know the information about the permit of the producer.
Below are a few businesses that need to obtain the FSSAI Registration or License compulsorily:
• Petty retailers, retail shops, snacks shops, confectionery or Bakery shops, etc.
• Temporary stalls, or food premises that are involved in the preparation, distribution, storage, and sale of food products.
• Hawkers who sell packed or freshly prepared food.
• Dairy units like milk chilling units, petty milkmen, and milk vendors.
• Vegetable oil processing units.
• Slaughterhouse like meat shop, mutton shop, chicken shop, lamb meat shop.
• Meat and Fish processing units.
• All food manufacturing and processing units include the repacking of food.
• Proprietary and novel food.
• Cold store facility.
• Transporter of food products that have several specialized vehicles like the insulated refrigerated van/wagon, milk tanker, food wagon, food trucks.
• Any wholesaler, supplier, distributor, and marketer of food products.
• Hotels, Restaurants, and Bars.
• Dhabas, Banquet halls with food catering, home-based food services and
• Food stalls in fairs or other religious places.
• Importers and the Exporters of Food.
• And cloud kitchens.
The type of FSSAI Certification/ License/Registration that is to be obtained by the above businesses depends on the eligibility criteria of the business
Types of FSSAI Certification/ Registration
FSSAI registration is based on the business types, turnover, and capacity of production. Depending upon the installed capacity and turnover, FBOs are eligible for licenses such as basic licenses, central licenses, and state licenses.
FSSAI Basic Registration: FBOs having a turnover of less than Rs.12 lakh p.a must obtain FSSAI basic registration by filing Form A.
FSSAI State License: This is obtained by FBOs having a turnover of more than Rs.12 lakh p.a and less than Rs.20 crore p.a. by filing Form B.
FSSAI Central License: This is obtained by FBOs having a turnover of more than Rs.20 crore p.a by filing Form- B
Documents required for obtaining FSSAI License/Registration
In general, the following documents are required to obtain a license or registration:
• Photo
• Aadhar Card
• PAN Card
• Business Registration Certificate – certificate of incorporation shop and establishment certificate or any other registration certificate
• Address proof of the business – latest electricity bill or rental agreement or NOC from the owner
• Type and list of the products processed
The aforementioned documents are only basic requisites. There may be a need for specific documents depending on the list of products and type of license
FSSAI Registration Status
The applicant will get alerts by either SMS/Email regarding the status of registration. In addition, the applicant can also track the status of the registration by entering the application reference number provided to him after submission of his application on the “Track Application Status” tab on FoSCoS website
Renewal of FSSAI License
The license is valid for a period of 1 to 5 years based on the validity period selected by the applicant. Every applicant shall renew the license within 30days before the expiry of the license
